Do you remember the first time you visited a cam site?
It can be jarring to load a live video stream and see a model staring directly through the camera. It's almost as if she's looking right at you.
For the initiated, this can induce panic - to hilarious effect.
My mind goes back to one unfortunate story of an elderly user who emailed CamsRank seeking reassurance that his identity hadn't been exposed by a webcam advert. This man had never used a cam website before (he says), but he'd obviously been surfing porn since his browser had loaded a LiveJasmin popunder in an adjacent tab.
When he switched to this tab, the shock of a model staring back at him, gyrating in her undies, was enough to trigger a fight or flight response. He told me how he'd physically ducked under his desk so fast that he'd managed to herniate a disk in his back.
"Why the hell did you do that?" I asked.
To keep it anon, of course.
His reason for contacting us was fear. What if a malicious model had recorded him in the brief micro-seconds before he sought cover under the desk? The whole world could see his face! I asked if he had started a Cam2Cam session.
You can probably guess his response. "A what?"
I feel bad for laughing at this escapade, but he's certainly not the first LiveJasmin ad recipient to ask: “Can the model see me?”
Unless you've sleep-spammed your way in to a live cam2cam session, the answer is nearly always "No".
Seriously, though, let's take a look at how visibility works on cam sites!
In most standard cam shows, the model cannot see you.
Think of the freemium sites like Chaturbate or StripChat. For a model to see the thousands of screens of her visitors, it would look like something out of WWE's thunderdome:
Visually impressive, but somewhat lacking in intimacy...
By default, a cam model cannot see you sitting there with your meat at the ready.
You, as a viewer, can see the model, but the model only sees your username and chat messages. This one-way visibility maintains your privacy.
However, there are exceptions...
Some platforms offer features where viewers can opt to share their own webcam feed with the model. This is often used in private or exclusive shows. It's typically known as Cam2Cam or Two-Way Video Chat.
If you’re in a private session and enable your webcam, yes, the model can see you.
Whether she'll pay attention to you is another question altogether, but your feed will be available on her screen.
Two-way video interactions (known as Cam2Cam) are a special type of private show. This format typically costs around 10-30% more than a standard private show. The idea is that the action is hotter and more personal if the model can see your response.
In some cases you can enable your microphone so she can hear you, too.
Some viewers enjoy specific interactions that are better facilitated with two-way video. For example, role-playing scenarios or instructional shows.
When you dig in to the popular sub-categories on cam sites, you'll find certain fetishes that work much better in a Cam2Cam environment. The classic JOI category (jerk-off instructions) is one example.
Remember, whether or not you use your webcam is entirely up to you. Most cam models are used to interacting with anonymous viewers, and for many, this is the arrangement they prefer.
The important thing to remember here, to avoid herniating a disk in your back, is that any cam site adverts you see (popups or popunders) will not have cam2cam enabled by default.
You'd have to go through several steps to even be capable of triggering the request by mistake.
It's highly unlikely you would accidentally register an account, load it with funds, enter a chat room, request a cam2cam chat and have it accepted without realising your mistake. Although I'm sure a few busted spouses have tried this excuse!
It might look like the model is staring right at you, or even laughing at you in that split second as you whip out your meat and veg - but trust me, she's pre-occupied elsewhere!
The one exception where a model may be able to see you on cam is if you've stumbled across one of the many roulette-style cam sites.
These sites use random video matchmaking technology to pair you with a model in the hope that you'll stick around and pay money to keep chatting with her.
Before these sites can access your webcam and microphone, they need your explicit permission. This will come in the form of a popup that prompts you to enable your devices to use the site.
It looks like this:
If you are ballsy enough to allow the site to use your camera and microphone, then yes, models will be able to see and hear you.
I can understand why somebody might have privacy concerns if they routinely tap Allow buttons out of habit.
Note, however, that these ads are banned in the TOS of most advertising networks. In theory, you shouldn't be running in to the popup above unless you've purposefully gone to a roulette matchmaking site.
It's only a small percentage of cam site customers who opt for cam2cam sessions, but if you want to join the club, keep these steps in mind:
A StreamMate model/reader notes, “Most viewers are cautious about privacy, and rightly so. I always remind them that they’re in control of what they share. If someone wants to keep their cam off, I totally respect that.”
Recording private shows without consent is a breach of trust and against the rules on most platforms. Not to mention, it's really bad camming etiquette.
Most cam sites have strict policies and technical measures to prevent unauthorized recording.
If you’re a model, it’s crucial to set boundaries and make your no-recording policy clear. For viewers, respect these rules and ask yourself the question: "How would I feel if a model recorded my feed and uploaded my savage grunts to a leak site for all to see?"
Probably not great, right?
Whether or not you share your webcam is a personal choice. But recording without permission will always be a d*** move.
If you're going to request a Cam2Cam show, keep in mind: you will inevitably pay more for the experience. How much more varies from site to site. You can use our comparison tool or our individual site ratings to find the latest pricing.
If you're simply worried about being outed for watching cam streams, rest assured: there is no need to duck under the desk every time a new chat loads.
Models cannot see you unless you choose to share your video feed.
