MyFreeCams Review

Ten years ago, MyFreeCams was sweeping just about every cam site award that mattered. The site pioneered the freemium cam site model, letting users watch all the action for free... with no need for expensive private shows.

What happened?

The competition caught up - and MFC stood still. 

It's hard to look past the early-noughties design, or the limited user experience. As you'll see from our scores below, MyFreeCams is still highly relevant. The models are great, the stream quality is good. Some of the free shows on here are legendary. The fundamentals are all there. 

But to say the site is in need of a lick of paint would be an understatement.

MyFreeCams has traditionally focused on young female models. There's no sign of this changing anytime soon.

Despite a complete lack of male, trans and female-male couples, we still have to score the model selection highly. 

Why? Because the best models that MFC has to offer are some of the best in the damn business. Serial award winners, and serial wallet extractors, these girls provide the closest thing to a virtual girlfriend experience on cam.

Female Performers

MFC might as well stand for MyFemaleCams. Girls rule the roost on MFC.

While the site boasts a database in the tens of thousands, our best estimates put the total active models at around 12,000 to 15,000 performers. From these, you'll typically find around 800 live at any given time.

The demographics of these models has shifted considerably over the years. MFC used to be known for its popular selection of All-American teens. In more recent years, the platform has leaned heavily towards Europe with around half  of the girls based in Romania. There's a sizeable contingent from Ukraine/Russia too, although not as many as you'll find on rival site BongaCams. 

You can still find American girls on MFC, and we'd say that it's one of the best freemium sites for this purpose. 

Based on several visits carried out during our review, we'd put the total number of girls from North America at around 30%.

The age of the performers has also trended upwards over the years. MFC used to be closely associated with the 18-25 demographic. The site even had maximum age restrictions back in its pomp. These days, you'll find a small selection of 'mature' models, although it's a weak roster compared to the freemium competition.

Male Performers

Male models are not allowed on MFC.

The platform categorically bans men from appearing on camera, or even in the same room as a live performance. Even the implication of men appearing off-camera is banned.

Trans Performers

Trans models are not allowed on MFC.

Couples

No men are allowed, so you won't find any male-on-female action here. 

Only registered MFC models can appear in a live broadcast. While there is the potential for lesbian shows, these are rare, and any 'participants' must be fully registered and verified.

There's no way of searching for couple shows despite an extensive tagging system.

MyFreeCams scores highly for video quality.

1080p is enabled for most streams; a big positive. 

The maximum bitrate is 3 Mb/s. This is pretty decent, although it falls short of the truly high-end platforms. Both Streamate and LiveJasmin reach 5 Mb/s, and it's noticeable in shows with a lot of high-frequency movement (i.e. when she turns on that Lovense sex machine!).

Stream settings are easily accessible in each show, and neatly-labelled: HLS, LL HLS and WebRTC.

MFC openly lets you choose between 1080p, 720p, 360p and 180p -- unlike some platforms which try to hide their lack of 1080p by using the opaque 'High', 'Medium' and 'Low'.

MFC might be ugly as ass, but it's got some stand-out features that set it apart from its closest rivals.

Cheap Sex Toy Activation

MyFreeCams is home to the famous 'Wall of Yellow' - a term given to how the chat window looks when viewers spam a model's tip-activated vibrator with consecutive 1 token tips. This has become something of a live meme.

You can activate a model's sex toy for as little as $0.10 (1 token). It's crazy popular, and a great way to get 'involved' with the public shows.

MFC lacks a native interface for interactive toy menus. Models do their best to compensate, though - some even using whiteboards in their bedrooms!

MFC Share

MFC Share is like a ManyVids/OnlyFans marketplace. You can trade tokens for custom image sets and video clips of your favorite MFC models. 

You can also join a camgirl's fan club for extra perks - from winning a pair of her used panties, to accessing her private Snapchat. While other cam platforms have attempted to roll out their own versions of MFC Share, we have to give credit where it's due: this is the best marketplace extension of the lot. 

There have been some recent controversial attempts to clean up the more 'taboo' content that gets shared here.

Recorded Private Shows

MFC records private shows. The videos are automatically stored in an archive where you can fap away to your heart's content at a later date. We think this adds significant value to those $6-per-minute private shows.

MyFreeCams is hellbent on showing that it has hundreds of cam girls online, to the detriment of the overall user experience.

This is immediately apparent when you load up the homepage - an ugly dated grid with dozens of tiny thumbnails used to create an illusion that we're spoiled for choice. And we are, but the algorithm is too haphazard to be trusted.

You could argue that Chaturbate follows a similar formula, but at least Chaturbate uses recently updated thumbnails of the shows in progress. With MFC, you're often left browsing through 'Offline' thumbnails for shows that shouldn't even be appearing on the main index.

MFC uses a vast tagging system to promote discoverability, but it's too generic to be useful. What good are tags like 'cute' or 'sexy' or 'hot'?

The interface isn't awful, but if you compare it to modern platforms like CamSoda or StripChat, MFC is really starting to shows its age - the overall brand is hampered by a legacy platform that could be greatly improved.

MFC uses a simple credit system with a 20% discount available for bulk buys:

• 7,575 tokens: $599.99

This is a pretty standard discount, but appreciated nonetheless.

Payments are by:

• PayPal

There are currently no options for payment by crypto.

We put through several payments using different billing systems as part of this review. 

The majority lived up to the 'fully discreet' billing claimed by MFC. However, one payment left a service provider domain on our statement that could be traced back to MFC via a simple Google search.

In the event that you end up using the same billing company, we will have to describe the billing here as partially discreet.

MFC has a fair refund system for new members providing you have spent less than 200 tokens.

We have a marginal preference for the mobile version of MFC over the desktop interface, but it still has some fundamental user experience issues.

We were unable to adjust the stream quality, or resize the live feed. Key buttons that should be easily accessible are tucked away in small text. The filtering system is even more of a drag on the mobile site - discovering specific types of shows is a real chore.

One notable highlight is the effectiveness of the full-screen option. Once you've actually found a suitable show, this works well. 

As one of the leading freemium cam sites, MFC scores highly for action-to-spend.

The majority of the top models stream their performances in free public chats. You can tune in without having to spend money.

Where MFC loses a couple of points is in their dogmatic approach to private show rates. All private chats are fixed at 60 credits ($6 per minute). Many models simply won't offer private shows because they anticipate (often correctly) they will earn more from public tips.

We can't think of a good reason to justify fixed private show pricing. MFC should let the economy dictate what users are willing to pay, and models are able to charge. 

MyFreeCams, the former undisputed king, now has to settle for being one of a handful of platforms that does the freemium experience well. 

Traffic has been in decline for several years.

Perhaps MFC could have defended its position from Chaturbate and StripChat. A nod towards innovation, or at least a better design and UX, and the cam scene might look very different today.

Still, good design or bad design, it's the models at the heart of MFC that continue to drive the platform forward. 

When we look at the very top performers, the 1%, they have live streaming down to a fine art. 

In fact, if we took the top 100 models from every cam site, and made them compete for viewers, there's a very good chance that Team MFC would come out on top. 

Dismiss them at your peril. ;)
