Amateur.tv Review

Amateur.tv has been around for over 10 years, but you might not have heard about it until recently. 

It has been a Spanish-language cam site for much of the last decade. The site only came onto our radar in the latter half of 2022 after a heavy marketing drive (and a Western-targeted rebrand).

In terms of total traffic, Amateur.tv hasn't quite become a household name yet, but we're always eager to see what the independent smaller platforms are doing. The good news: this is not another cookie-cutter white-label. You can watch unique camgirls that might not stream anywhere else online.

Model Selection

We're pleased to see that Amateur.tv offers camming for women, men, couples and trans performers. 

There's a clear bias toward females here, but all performers are welcome.

When we visited, 301 live cams were available. 

Obviously, these aren't the best numbers. Would the platform be better if they could maintain around 1,000 webcams? Of course, but there's only so many models to go around.

There's a definite regional bias here though: most cam sites have a lot of South American performers, but at Amateur.tv, there's clearly a lot of LATAM recruiting in effect.

We prefer websites having a location filter as well as a language filter, but it's not a huge deal on Amateur.tv, since almost all of the cammers here are from Colombia. 

Note that the French speakers are Colombian too - around 30% of the country is able to speak French fluently.

Female Performers

Of the 301 live cammers on Amateur.tv, 223 were in the female category. 

216 of these were in the Spanish speaking category, so almost all of the girls are from Colombia or another country in South America. There were two people tagged with ‘Chinese’, but after checking, neither of them did.

Suffice to say: if you’re a fan of Latinas, this website is fantastic – if you’re looking for another ethnicity, go somewhere else.

Conveniently, the website does let you see the age brackets of the performers:

We appreciate the 18-22 category: we complained in our review of Cams.com that their first age bracket was 18 to 29: it makes a lot more sense to keep the fresh meat in their own little area. 

That said, we still believe that BongaCams’ approach of a slider is the best way to do things. 

This approach is a close second. It’s nice to see that you’ve got dozens of girls to pick from under the age of 22 too: there’s no denying that teen Colombians are some of the hottest to watch on webcam.

Most female performers stream from home and tend to do so via a standard webcam. 

We did see a few using a mobile setup instead, but not enough to warrant its own section for those who are visiting on their phones. Overall quality is impressive: Colombians tend to do well with camming and take their jobs quite seriously. Attractive sets, high resolution cams, crisp audio – you’ll find it here.

Male Performers

21 of the webcams were men: the quality really suffered here compared to the women, although that’s almost always the nature when it comes to guys streaming cams. 

In most instances, these are just dudes who want to jerk off and might make a few bucks from someone watching them. The quality of men here was below other platforms: a lot of overweight guys with choppy webcams and bad lighting.

It seems that posting your age is optional, since only 13 of the 21 streamers in the male category appeared when filtering by ages. 

Only 4 were 30 or below, whereas 9 were 30 or above. Unless you really have a thing for supremely amateur guys who aren’t that physically attractive – we’d say other websites have a far better roster if you only care about men.

Trans Performers

If you’ve ever looked for trans cams online, you likely know that South Americans tend to provide some of the best. It would be far better if there were more than 19 online though, and that’s the biggest flaw when it comes to the TS performers that Amateur.tv has to offer: we need more of them!

All shows were solo, except one where a male was interacting with the trans girl. 

We’ve seen other websites have ‘top’ and ‘dominatrix’ trans girls as decent chunk of their talent pool: not the case at Amateur.tv. 

These ladies are traditionally feminine and want to be treated as such. Lots of dildos, butt play, sexy lingerie and so on. Colombians love tan lines too – some of these girls had really sexy G-string imprints on their skin, which is always nice.

Couples

When we went to the couples category, a total of 30 were available – almost all of them were one guy, one girl. There was one group of two guys and two girls, but this seems to be pretty rare and in most instances, you’re only going to see a couple getting it on.

A few of the cams were disconnected, but the shows were still live. 

Further down the list, we also saw a few streams that had AFK performers – not ideal. Although there were technically 30 couples online, it was closer to 20 that you could actually watch and get anything out of. 

We may have caught the platform at a bad time with an above-average level of inactivity, but the platform should do more to shift away those who aren’t streaming so it doesn’t clog up the index pages.

Live Shows

We’re pleased to report that you can enjoy a lot of cams at Amateur.tv without paying. 

You don’t even need to sign up. 

Users tend to prefer platforms that they can visit and try for free, so Amateur.tv certainly has that going for it.

They’re not even pushy with signing up – something that other platforms do (BongaCams, for instance), so take your time and browse before creating an account.

Free Public Shows

Amateur.tv makes the free public shows its bread and butter more so than any other platform we’ve come across in the past. 

Honestly: you’ll find that every single online performer here can be viewed without having to pay. Some platforms have the option for girls to be in ‘private only’ mode, where there’s no free preview: this doesn’t appear to be an option at Amateur.tv or, if it is, no one uses it.

There are no limits to what performers can do in their free broadcasts: you’ll find plenty of ladies who are completely naked, playing with themselves and taking tips to activate their sex toys. Some camgirls even have fucking machines and you can watch it all, without an account, for an unlimited amount of time.

Amateur.tv is very much up there with the best freemium adult webcam platforms we’ve reviewed.

Private Shows

They are available, but they appear to be quite rare. We checked out the private show area: only one performer was in one out of the 300 or so that were online.

If you want to take a model into private, this is the prompt that you’ll see:

This model was quite popular in her free preview, but with only one rating, it shows us that this isn’t a mainstay of the platform, and girls tend to stick in their free public chat mode over going into private sessions. 

However, the option is there for you, so that’s always nice.

Additionally, while we’re disappointed at the upselling that comes with exclusive private, we do appreciate that it’s made clear what comes with each option before you start spending any money.

Sadly, all of the private show per-minute fees are set at the same rate: 1,500 coins for 60 seconds of action. 

Coins have a varied cost depending on package size, but they’re around $1 for 1,000, so you’re looking at $1.50 per minute. 

This is a great rate, but the problem is that it’s economically unsound to force all performers to operate at this level. It creates what’s known in economics as a deadweight loss: price floors and price ceilings create unwilling buyers or unwilling sellers, which hurts both parties in both instances. 

Amateur.tv should remove this limitation and allow performers to set their own rates.

Exclusive Private Shows

This comes with cam-to-cam and the inability for others to spy on you. You’ll pay a premium, but for many, this will be worth it for the C2C alone. 

Their tool to check your microphone and camera are nice to have as well – you don’t want to spend a few minutes troubleshooting your setup while you’ve got your dick in your hand.

We’re not huge fans of the minimum time associated with exclusive private sessions: it seems arbitrary and all instances we saw were at 5 minutes. 2,100 coins per minute is equal to around $2.10 – a more than acceptable fee, but as above, it reduces the likelihood of you ever actually having an exclusive private show.

Voyeur Shows

In the extremely unlikely event of the streamer you want to watch being in a private show that doesn’t have exclusivity enabled, you can spy on the action. You get 15 seconds of free preview before paying for every 5 seconds. Audio and video is provided, but you cannot type or interact with the camgirl in any other way.

It’s a nice option to have, but given the fact that barely anyone has a private show, it’s kinda redundant.

Stream Quality

Some cam platforms don’t make it a chore to find objective stream metrics: others give you a bit of a challenge. 

We spent about 20 minutes rooting around in the source code of Amateur.tv to try and sniff out a direct cam feed link so we could get objective data: no dice. 

The level of DRM protection that this platform uses is unlike anything we’ve encountered before. 

We even struggled to get screenshots to render without returning a black image: try it yourself and see.

As much as we dislike relying on the platforms to self-report their quality, we’re confident that the options presented to us by Amateur.tv are valid: 1080p and 480p. 

We were impressed with the number of 1080p shows too: even the chubby dudes streaming from home were running in full HD. 

We wish we could report on the bitrate objectively, but we can only give a subjective estimate: somewhere between 1.5 Mb/s and 2.5 Mb/s seems about where most streams on Amateur.tv are.

Site Design

We have something of an ideological opposition to DRM, but in the case of a cam stream environment – we understand it. It makes our job harder, but for the average user, it won’t impact their experience in any capacity.

Though we will mention that it makes recording sessions here incredibly difficult for the average user: even we were stumped. 

Whether or not it would be ethical to do this in the first place – that’s another question entirely, but we thought we’d mention it right away just to let you know that things here are different to how they are on other cam platforms.

Elsewhere, filtering and navigation are fine: they’re not world-class, but they do the job that they’re required to do. We’d like to see country filtering as well as languages, as well as better management of age ranges, but on the whole – Amateur.tv is simple enough and intuitive enough for people to find the type of camgirl they want with very little hassle. 

Having picture-in-picture is also a nice touch: you can navigate around while still watching your performer of choice in the bottom right-hand corner of the site.

Live Chat UX

The chat is acceptable, but the combination of meta information alongside messages is something that we really dislike.

Some girls have a tip goal, which you can activate – and that’s cool, but when you couple this with low-fee toy activation, it quickly fills up the screen with a huge amount of spam that makes it hard to keep track of what’s going on. 

The platform isn’t quite big enough yet for this to be a major concern, but they should streamline the aesthetic of this as quickly as possible: it’s ugly and feels like you’re watching a huge Twitch.tv streamer who’s being spammed with emotes and memes.

Streams tend to have just two quality options: 1080p and 480p. 

This is the bare minimum that we think is acceptable, although maybe a third option wouldn’t go amiss. That said, some sites only have one format, so having a lower quality choice is very much appreciated.

Amateur.tv has an interface for activating toys – we’ll talk about that later, but it’s a lot better than what other services offer and, given the relatively low cost required to activate them, it’s something that we really love to see.

Mobile UX

The mobile homepage of Amateur.tv leaves a lot to be desired:

We tested on an iPhone 12, which is a fairly modern phone, but it doesn’t have some crazy resolution or anything – so why are the cams organized in such a way that they appear to stack horizontally instead of vertically? 

You have to scroll your thumb side to side instead of up and down, which is far less intuitive and functional. Every other mobile cam site we’ve visited has managed this far better: Amateur.tv ought to do the same.

Despite the homepage being bad, the experience when you do load up a stream is really good. 

You can pinch, zoom and pan the center spot of any camgirl, with an almost-fullscreen environment provided and the ability to simply remove the chat and toy activation meta messages if you tap the interface once. You cannot go into true fullscreen, but honestly – everything else is exactly as we’d want it to be. 

All but one thing: there’s no picture-in-picture for mobile browsing.

Let’s take a little look at the other elements of Amateur.tv:

Interactive Sex Toys

Since all of the action here is public, camgirls make their money through tips. 

There’s a big incentive for tips to be provided via sex toy activations, with Lovense, OhMiBod and so on supported. 

There’s a tip menu that you can interact with that shows you all of your options and the fees associated with them:

Girls can set their own rates, and given that $1 gets you 1,000 coins, you can see that for a lot of these options, it’s really and pleasurable thrills. 

Historically, websites with low-fee toy activations have bad interfaces and typically use chat as the only way to showcase prices – not the case with Amateur.tv, and we love the provision of a dedicated interface so you can clearly see what’s what.

Amateur.tv Elite

There’s an elite program that you can sign up for – it’s independent of your coin purchases and comes with a treasure trove of benefits and bonuses. 

You’ll have to pay a monthly fee of $9.99, but if you plan to use the site for any real length of time, it’s worth the investment. Do note that when it rebills, it will cost you $19.99 – this is mentioned on the billing popup, but not the main pitch page. We think it should be made more obvious.

Advantages include a monthly subscription to the camgirl of your choice, private message support, the ability to send images, highlighted chat messages, the ability to tip anonymously and being able to GIF/emojis in the chat.

The main benefits come from chat interactivity, so if you like to be seen – definitely the path for you.

Sadly, it looks as though you can only pay for Amateur.tv Elite with a credit card, despite being able to purchase coins with other billing options.

Action-to-Spend

Amateur.tv has one of the best free access models we’ve seen – a high score here was inevitable. 

Not only is the website freemium friendly, but the main way you do spend coins (with tips) has a low barrier to entry, and for just a few cents, you can activate sex toys. We appreciate the lack of pushy signup prompts too – you can stay logged out here for hours without having to eventually hand over an email address. In fact, you can sign up without an email if you want.

Private sessions are budget friendly, but the fixed nature of rates is a bit of a downer. More flexibility would really assist both visitors and models alike.

We paid for our coins with USD, despite billing from Australia. We don’t have an issue with this and in actuality, prefer it over what many other websites do: charge you in your local currency and take a cut of the exchange rate to pocket some extra cash.

You get the best ratio from $76.95 onward, and it’s quite a deal over the lower-tier packages, so definitely consider paying a bit extra on your recharges to get the best bang for your buck.

PayPal rates are a little higher than credit card recharges, but we were pleased to see that you got the same package rates with cryptocurrency. 

We did a test transaction with Ether and were charged an appropriate amount given the current market rates of ETH/USD.

Refund Policy

From the website’s terms of use:

As a general rule there will be no refunds. If any problems arise during the payment process, or a payment is duplicated without consuming the token, please use the specific Complaint Procedure… Refunds are only sent to the card of the original payment.

Pretty cut and dry. This is stock standard in the camming game, and as much as we’d like a little bit of wiggle room, we appreciate they’re upfront about their policy.

Discreet Billing

When we made a purchase, here’s what our bank reported to us:

The billing information provided didn’t immediately return anything adult related – a deep search on Google eventually came up with something, but we had to jump through several hoops to make the association.

We think it’s fair to say that Amateur.tv’s billing is fully discreet.

We tend to find smaller sites are smaller for a reason: low quality feeds, small pools of performers, stifled interactivity – that type of thing. 

After an extensive analysis of Amateur.tv: we’re pleasantly surprised.

Many rival services have worse interfaces, features, billing options and stream qualities, and it’s really only the total number of performers where Amateur.tv is lagging behind the big ticket names such as BongaCams, Chaturbate and so on.

Aside from being smaller than other freemium services and being highly concentrated on Colombian performers, we have very few complaints here.

With an influx of exclusive new performers - and more variety - it could become a world-class spot to enjoy free live sex.
